The Architecture of Disconnection

Disengagement from democracy isn’t accidental – it’s been built. Neoliberalism, big tech monopolies, and decades of extractive capitalism have designed an architecture that disconnects us from one another and from power. The result is a society where communities are isolated, culture is commodified, and political participation feels futile.

At Democracia84, we expose this architecture and its effects – from the erosion of collective identity to the hollowing out of civic spaces to the rise of AI and its impacts on everyday life. We work within communities outside of London to co-create policy briefings and then create space to imagine new, people-first futures where democracy is reconnected to culture, community, and everyday life.

Speculative Blueprints for Democratic Futures

If disconnection was designed, renewal can be too. Democracia84 organises participatory research projects within communities and then develops speculative concepts and cultural blueprints that reimagine how democracy could feel, look, and work in everyday life. These aren’t abstract exercises – they’re visions rooted in culture, art, and lived experience, designed to spark debate and inspire action.

Our approach is to think boldly and practically at once: mapping the possibilities of a people-first future while grounding each blueprint in research and the voices of real communities, not just speculations from those sitting in Westminster. By imagining futures together, we create cultural tools that challenge resignation and open pathways to democratic hope.

Impact Framework

Co-creating in policy

Our niche lies in the combination of our creative concepts, participatory research, and policymaking – all of which are focused on the working class and youth.

“Social mobility has stalled. Class remains the most powerful predictor of life outcomes – yet is the least discussed axis of inequality.”
